Next Year's Dorm Gets Decided in October. Here's How Three Schools Are Running It.
At many colleges, next year's housing is settled in October, not spring. JMU's contracts have filled in two weeks or less, Ole Miss rewards October payers with first-round room picks, and Purdue runs a lottery with binding deadlines. Here's what families need to know.
Most families think about next year's housing in the spring. At many schools, the decisive moment is October. Applications open, clocks start, and the order students sign up in can settle where they live next year, or whether they get campus housing at all.
Three schools show how different the rules can be: one is first-come, one rewards early payment with a random draw, and one runs a straight lottery.
James Madison University: First Come, First Served
JMU's Live On Again! contract for returning students opened October 1, 2026, for the 2027–28 year. It stays open only until spaces are full. After that, students move to a waitlist and are offered a contract only if a space opens.
The warning that matters: JMU says contracts have filled in two weeks or less for each of the past three years. If your student needs on-campus housing next year, this is a this-week decision, not a this-semester one.
One caution before signing. The contract is legally binding for the full academic year and can be canceled only within five business days of signing. JMU tells students plainly not to treat it as a backup option.
Ole Miss: Pay in October, Get a Random First-Round Slot
For admitted first-year students starting in fall 2027, Ole Miss opened its housing application on October 1, 2026. All freshmen are required to live in university-managed housing, so every incoming family goes through this.
The timing rule is the story. Students who pay the $100 nonrefundable application fee between October 1 and October 31 receive a randomly generated room-selection time in round one. Students who pay later get round-two times in the order their fee was received.
There's a second requirement that's easy to miss months later: students must be registered for Orientation by April 9, 2027, at 4:00 p.m. CT to take part in room selection at all.
Purdue: A Lottery, With Hard Binding Dates
Purdue's returning-student process for 2027–28 is a lottery. Residents had to opt in between September 28 and October 4, and everyone who opted in had an equal chance regardless of when they signed up. Students who missed that window won't get another chance this fall.
What's coming next:
- By October 7: students receive their result by email: a room-selection slot, an assignment slot, or notice that they weren't selected.
- October 20–22: rising juniors and seniors choose rooms, each in a six-hour window. Make-up day is October 23. Contracts become legally binding October 26 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
- October 27–29: current first-year students choose. Make-up day is October 30. Contracts become binding November 2 at 11:59 p.m. ET.
Students who aren't selected go on a standby list automatically, and a waitlist opens in January. Purdue's 2027–28 room rates haven't been approved yet, so families may be signing a binding contract before they know the price.
What Families Should Check Now
Three schools, three systems. Before housing season catches you off guard, find out:
- Which system your student's school uses: first-come, lottery, payment-date priority, or guaranteed housing.
- When it opens. At several schools, that's October, not spring.
- When the contract becomes binding, and what canceling costs.
- What happens if you miss out: waitlist, standby, or off-campus.
- Whether rates are set yet, so you can budget for a number you may not know.
A missed housing window affects everything downstream: travel, storage, move-in day and the off-campus search. Those are the details CollegeLogistics helps families plan around.
