Senior Move-In to Off-Campus Housing: The Upgrade You Actually Have to Plan

Moving into your senior-year apartment is a completely different experience from freshman dorm move-in — more freedom, more responsibility, and a lot more to coordinate. Here’s how to handle it.

Moving into your senior-year apartment is the first taste of post-college life. Nobody provides a checklist. Nobody assigns a move-in window. Nobody has already put furniture in the room. It is completely yours to figure out.

Off-Campus Is a Different Game

Dorm move-in has infrastructure: staff, carts, specific windows. Apartment move-in has none of that. You coordinate directly with a landlord, manage your own elevator situation, handle utilities, and deal with whatever previous tenants left behind. Build buffer time into move-in day — friction almost always exists.

The 30-Day Pre-Move Checklist

One month before move-in: set up electric, gas, and internet in your name before move-in day — internet installation appointments book out weeks in advance. Get renter’s insurance, which is inexpensive and often required by landlords. Coordinate with roommates on who brings the couch, kitchen table, and dishes before anyone buys anything. Measure doorways before purchasing any large furniture.

What You Actually Need on Day One

A bed with appropriate bedding, a desk or table, a place to sit, one pan, one pot, basic utensils, a cutting board, bathroom supplies, and cleaning supplies. Everything else can be acquired gradually as you discover what you actually use. The trap of senior move-in is over-purchasing at IKEA before you know the space.

The Storage Carryover Question

Many seniors have belongings in campus-area storage from prior years. This is the year to retrieve and evaluate that unit. Some items make the transition naturally. Others have been stored for three years and you have lived without them — which answers the question of whether you need them.
