Your Complete Freshman Move-In Checklist
Move-in day is exciting and chaotic. This comprehensive checklist covers everything from bedding and tech to what your school actually provides — so you don't overpack, underpack, or forget the one thing you'll wish you had.
Before You Pack Anything: Check Your School's Policy
Every school has a list of prohibited items. Candles, certain appliances, extension cords without surge protection, and even some furniture types are banned at many schools. Find this list on your college's housing website before buying a single thing.
Bedding & Room Essentials
- Twin XL sheets (2 sets — trust us)
- Mattress pad or topper
- Pillows and pillowcases
- Comforter or duvet
- Shower caddy, flip flops, and a robe
- Over-door hooks and command strips (no nails!)
- Desk lamp and power strip with surge protector
Tech & Cables
- Laptop and charger
- Headphones (essential for shared spaces)
- USB hub
- HDMI cable if you want to use a TV monitor
- Backup battery pack
Kitchen & Laundry
- Reusable water bottle
- Coffee maker (check school policy)
- Laundry bag, detergent pods, fabric softener
- Stain remover pen (Tide To Go)
Health & Wellness
- Prescriptions (90-day supply)
- Insurance card and health docs
- Basic first aid kit
- Cold medicine, antacids, allergy meds
What Most Schools Provide
Desk, dresser, closet space, bed frame. Don't bring extra furniture unless your roommate has confirmed they are not. Measure your room dimensions before buying anything that takes floor space.
