Three Dates Left in October Worth Knowing. Here's What Stanford, Penn State and FSU Have Set.

The last stretch of October is quiet on the surface, but several schools have dates that close fast: Stanford's winter housing application, Penn State's virtual housing fair and FSU's winter job-shadow program. Here are the dates, the rules and what to check now.

Midterms are winding down, fall break is over, and most families are thinking about Thanksgiving. That's exactly when a few important dates slip by. This week, three schools have windows that close in days or a couple of weeks: a winter housing application, a free virtual housing fair, and a one-day job-shadow program over winter break.

None of these is complicated. They're just easy to miss if no one puts them on the calendar.

Stanford University: Winter Housing Applications Close October 23

Students who need housing for winter quarter apply through Stanford's first-round winter assignment process. The first-round winter application deadline is Friday, October 23, 2026, and first-round assignments are announced November 14, 2026.

Missing the first round doesn't end the process, but it changes it. Rolling winter applications run from October 24, 2026 to February 5, 2027, with assignments announced on a rolling basis from November 16, 2026 through February 5, 2027.

Looking further ahead, the first-round spring application deadline is February 5, 2027, with spring assignments announced February 27, 2027.

Students who need a disability-related housing accommodation should not wait for the housing deadline. Stanford's Office of Accessible Education (OAE) handles Housing Accommodation Request Forms separately, and its posted deadlines change each year. Students with winter or spring requests should contact OAE or their Disability Adviser directly to confirm the current deadline.

Penn State: Virtual Housing Fair on October 22

Penn State held its in-person Fall Housing Fair at University Park on October 18. For students and families who missed it, or who aren't near State College, a virtual housing fair runs Thursday, October 22, from 1 to 2 p.m.

The fair covers on- and off-campus housing options at University Park, available properties, lease terms and tenant responsibilities, and gives attendees a chance to ask housing representatives questions directly. Penn State encourages attendees to register in advance.

For families of students who will move off campus next year, this is a low-effort way to hear about lease terms before anyone signs anything.

Florida State University: FSU Shadow Applications Close November 4

FSU Shadow is a one-day job-shadowing program that pairs students with employers, community partners, alumni and friends of FSU. The next session is Monday, December 14, during winter break, and experiences can be virtual or in person.

Applications opened October 14, and student applications close November 4 at 11:59 p.m. Matches are released to students on November 11.

The program is open to all current FSU undergraduate and graduate students, as well as students at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. Students apply with their resume through NoleNetwork, using the employer name "FSU Shadow."

For a student who isn't sure about a major or career path, one day alongside a professional during break is a practical way to test an idea before committing to an internship.

What Families Should Check Now

  1. Confirm your student's housing plan for next term. If they're at Stanford and need winter housing, the first-round deadline is October 23.
  2. Ask about accommodations separately. Disability-related and other accommodation requests often run on their own timeline, ahead of the general housing deadline. Check with the responsible office directly.
  3. Use housing fairs before lease season. If your student is considering off-campus housing, attend a fair (in person or virtual) to understand lease terms and responsibilities first.
  4. Look for break-time opportunities. Winter break programs like FSU Shadow have application deadlines in early November, weeks before the break starts.
  5. Put the announcement dates on the calendar too. Knowing when assignments or matches are released helps you plan travel, storage and move-in around them.

Housing, breaks and moves all run on deadlines that are easy to lose track of. CollegeLogistics helps families keep those dates, and the logistics around them, in one place.
