The Smart Parent's Guide to Admitted Students Weekend
Admitted Students Weekends are high-stakes, high-energy events that can shape whether your student commits. Here's how parents can prepare, what to watch for, and how to make the most of the weekend without hovering.
What Admitted Students Weekend Actually Is
Admitted Students Weekends (also called Revisit Days or Yield Events) are the school's best shot at converting accepted students into enrolled students. They're designed to be impressive. Your job as a parent is to look past the performance and help your student ask harder questions.
Before You Arrive
- Book lodging the day you receive the invitation — these weekends sell out
- Arrange travel so your student arrives rested, not stressed
- Review the schedule in advance and flag any must-attend sessions
- Prepare 3–5 questions specific to your student's interests and concerns
During the Weekend
Let your student lead. Your job is support, not steering. Attend parent-specific sessions (financial aid, safety, health services) while your student is in student-only programming. Take notes separately and compare observations afterward.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Vague answers to specific financial aid questions
- Student panelists who seem coached rather than candid
- Housing availability issues (if they can't confirm your student's situation, ask hard)
- Peer energy that feels off for your student's personality
After the Weekend: The Debrief
Within 24 hours, have your student write down their top 3 pros and cons while memories are vivid. The goal is not to make a decision that day — it's to capture honest impressions before they fade or get replaced by marketing materials.
