Summer Storage for College Students: What to Know Before You Commit

Hauling everything home for the summer isn't always the best option. Whether it's a cross-country move-out or just a tight apartment, here's what to know about college student storage — prices, providers, and pitfalls.

Why Summer Storage Is a Real Problem

Most freshman dorms require students to vacate by mid-May. If home is 1,000 miles away, shipping or flying everything back isn't practical. Even students whose parents live locally often find that stuffing a car twice a year gets old fast.

Your Storage Options

On-Campus Storage Programs

Some universities partner with storage companies to offer door-to-door pickup and delivery. It's convenient but can be expensive — $300–$600/semester for a standard-sized bin. Confirm pickup and delivery dates align with your actual move-out and move-in windows.

Local Storage Units

Renting a small 5x5 or 5x10 unit near campus is often the most economical option, especially if you have a car. Prices range from $50–$150/month depending on location. Look for facilities with 24/7 access and climate control if storing electronics.

Pack and Ship

For items you'll actually use over the summer (laptop, clothes, books), shipping via UPS Ground or FedEx can make more sense than storing. A medium box from Boston to LA runs $25–$45. Ship early to avoid end-of-year shipping surcharges.

What Not to Store

  • Perishables or any food items
  • Valuable jewelry or cash
  • Items you'll need within 2 weeks of storage start (the retrieval process can be slow)
