The Ride Home for Thanksgiving Has a Sign-Up Deadline. Here's How Three Schools Run It.

College Thanksgiving shuttles and buses run on sign-up windows, not walk-ups. William & Mary's airport shuttle requests close November 13, Pitt sells bus tickets only November 3–13 with all sales final, and UGA's subsidized airport shuttle must be booked 24 hours ahead. Here's what families need to know.

Thanksgiving is about six weeks away, but the deadline for the easiest ride home is closer than that. Many colleges run their own airport shuttles and charter buses for the break, and those rides work on sign-up windows, not walk-ups. Miss the window and the simple, school-run option is gone. What's left is a rideshare, a rental car, or a parent behind the wheel.

Three schools show how differently these programs work: one takes requests weeks ahead, one sells tickets for just ten days, and one runs a rolling, subsidized shuttle.

William & Mary: Request by November 13

W&M runs a Thanksgiving shuttle to Richmond International Airport (RIC). Online requests opened Monday, October 12, at 8:00 a.m., and requests close Friday, November 13, at 5:00 p.m.

  • Departures: Friday, November 20, and Saturday, November 21, at 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
  • Returns: Sunday, November 29, at the standard times of 1:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
  • Cost: $60 each way, paid before the travel date once the reservation is confirmed.

Read the fine print before booking. Cancellations after the final confirmation email, and no-shows, are non-refundable and billed at the full $60. Request forms left incomplete are deleted after 24 hours. Shuttles leave from and return to Sadler Terrace, and the airport pickup spot comes in each traveler's confirmation email.

Pitt: Tickets Sell for Ten Days Only

Pitt's Buses Home for the Holidays program runs charter buses to 10 destinations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Washington, D.C. The window is the story: tickets go on sale Tuesday, November 3, at 10:00 a.m. and stop selling Friday, November 13, at 10:00 a.m. Pitt sells tickets only between those dates.

  • Departure: Friday, November 20, from University Place (next to Nordenberg Hall), at 3:15 p.m. or 5:15 p.m. depending on destination.
  • Return: Sunday, November 29, with times varying by destination.
  • Prices: round trips run from $200 (Breezewood, PA) to $280 (New York, Secaucus and New Brunswick). Philadelphia and Allentown are $230 round trip; Washington, D.C., Frederick and King of Prussia are $220. One-way tickets are half the round-trip price.

Two rules matter for parents. All sales are final, with no refunds, exchanges or transfers. And the buses are for students only: a student ID must be shown to board.

UGA: A Subsidized Airport Shuttle, Booked a Day Ahead

The University of Georgia runs an Airport Shuttle Initiative with Groome Transportation for out-of-state students traveling to and from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. It is supported by the Office of the President, the Student Government Association and Auxiliary Services, and UGA describes the fare as a reduced price through a vendor discount plus a university subsidy.

Service runs in three windows: November 20–30, 2026, December 4–12, 2026, and January 6–11, 2027. Students first verify eligibility by logging in with their MyID, then book through the pricing page. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance. Pickup and drop-off are at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education & Hotel and the River Road Bus Turnout, between the East Campus Parking Deck and Busbee Hall.

UGA's page does not list a dollar amount or a cancellation policy, so check both when booking.

What Families Should Check Now

Whether your student is at one of these schools or another, ask these questions before you buy a plane ticket:

  1. Does the school run a break shuttle or bus? Check the transportation, parking or student life office.
  2. When does sign-up open and close? Some windows open weeks early; others last only days.
  3. Do the departure and return times match the flight? Book flights around the shuttle schedule, not the other way around.
  4. What happens if plans change? Refund, cancellation and no-show rules vary, and some sales are final.
  5. Who can ride? Some programs are limited to students, or to out-of-state students.

A missed sign-up window affects everything around the trip: flight times, airport parking and who handles the drive. Those are the travel details CollegeLogistics helps families plan.
